Unit 2: Portfolio Activity 3

With a critical eye, look around the funeral home you work in. Involve your employer in this exercise.

Look at your reception area – what do you think would enhance this part of the premises? Put yourself in the shoes of a bereaved family entering the funeral premises for the first time – what might be their first impressions?

Make a list of improvements that could be made. Use the same technique to critique other areas within the funeral home and share with your employer.

The student should put themself in the shoes of a bereaved family entering the funeral premises for the first time – what might be their first impressions?
For example:
Consider aesthetics, design and layout, first impressions, smell, lighting, temperature, security, noise levels, effective utilisation of space, safety and security of the deceased, office processes and administration, disability and access, available documentation.
Identify accommodation available for use – how could it be improved?
Is there need for improvement?
Think about putting the client at ease.
How is the reputation of the business viewed in the local community?

Start at the front door and follow the client journey through the building. Look at the different spaces that they will encounter and consider how they would appear to a bereaved family or other visiter coming into your premises.
