Consider each of the protected characteristics and the potential for prejudice. With the support of your tutor: –

a) identify how the ‘protected characteristics’ may manifest within a funeral service context.

b) discuss the potential for prejudice within your own workplace and the reputational damage that may be caused should the law be broken.

c) check internal business processes and procedures for identification and removal of the deceased, arranging, managing and conducting the funeral and if/where applicable, discuss with your employer, and make recommendations for improvement to ensure processes exist to safeguard against discrimination.

NAFD Guidance

Within this activity students are firstly expected to understand the protected characteristics of the Equality
Act 2010. Once they have a thorough understanding of each of these characteristics, they need to identify
areas where there may be potential for discrimination and prejudice during the funeral arrangement journey
and the funeral itself within their workplace.

For example, how do students’ treat customers with specific additional needs or from different cultural or
religious backgrounds? Are there areas for improvement? How do students’ own behaviours compare to that
of policies within their business? What considerations does the student need to be aware of with their own
behaviour and how they approach the client, or the deceased, or the wider community to prevent potential
prejudice?

Answers should be provided to each part of the question. A student should identify the protected
characteristics in part a, but then should give a general strategic view of the possible impacts of these on their
own role, their team, the business and the wider community or client.

David B – There are 9 protected characteristics. You should consider each and think about how and when we may come across people in the protected groups.

The command words in this activity are:

IDENTIFY, DISCUSS, CHECK, MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS.

You should look at your own procedures and the capacity for discrimination within your own workplace and ensure there are protocols to address any behaviours and ensure there is awareness.

Within your answer consider the impacts on Yourself, Colleagues, Your Business, The Community.
