At the age of 18 I joined the Royal Navy, and at the age of 21 became an ‘Electronic Warfare Director’, this role enabled me to react in high pressured situations and handling highly sensitive material. Serving in the Gulf War in 2008 and seeing some very interesting places all over the World in my 8 years served, I felt at the age of 26 I was ready to re-join the Family business. On re-joining in 2013, I immediately carried out my Diploma in Funeral Arranging and Administration, and went on to complete my Diploma in Funeral Directing in 2015. These courses enabled me to voice my thoughts, discuss other options and express myself in a safe, confidential environment, a teaching method I also provide.
My personal experience with bereavement is when I lost my Mother at the age of 12, despite this being an extremely hard time, it has given me the ability to have a greater understanding of what people are going through, I also find myself being drawn to try and help bereaved youngsters when they suffer a close loss.
With my teaching, students who may need a little extra support are welcome too, as I can provide access to a range of learning resources that may be useful for students who may need that little bit of extra help.
I am approachable, honest and fair, and want to develop training and standards for the individuals within the funeral industry at all levels.
The workshops I carry out for students provide clear objectives about what we will cover for the lesson they are working on, I will cover future modules to look at in advance, and what homework will need to be done in-between sessions. I am available 24 hours a day to talk to if further help is required, I will, however, maintain good communications throughout using the online tool ‘Moodle’, which is where your coursework and course-notes are obtained and submitted.
My teaching techniques have evolved since qualifying as a Tutor, taking on individual students from afar, to classes of 10 students.

With this in mind in 2013 I embarked on the NAFD Tutoring course and achieved the Certificate of Teaching in Lifelong Learning Skills which has now enabled me to become a tutor for the NAFD.
My aim is to encourage and ensure that students gain the knowledge and experience they need to achieve their diploma in Funeral Arranging and Administration and to go on to also achieve their Diploma in Funeral Directing.

At 18 I started at University studying Forensic Science and at... [more]the same time started working for a family run, independent funeral firm. I stayed with them for 4 years learning all elements of the funeral profession and gaining my first funeral qualification.
From here I moved to a larger funeral firm gaining a rounded view and vast amounts of experience dealing with large funeral numbers and alternating pressures, while here I completed my Diploma in Funeral Directing (2012). Eventually deciding a smaller family run firm was where I could excel, I returned to the independent firm.
While a funeral director I was involved with the army reserves and joined the army full time for a brief period, before becoming injured, which lead me back to the funeral profession having completed a total of 7 years service.
While with the military I kept my funeral skills and knowlege up to date by participating in funeral work during my leave periods. This whole experience gave me invaluable skills and a more dynamic life experience having been in the funeral industry from a young age.
I have now been in the funeral industry for 12 years and experienced bereavement first hand at the age of 16 when my Dad died.
I have worked up from the basics of work experience to a qualified funeral director and manager.
I gained my teaching qualification to pass on the knowledge I have and encourage all interested in the funeral industry to be the best they can be for themselves, the reputation of the industry and the families they serve, regardless of weather you have been in the industy for a short or long period of time.

Born in 1969, David is married with two children and currently lives in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. After leaving school David successfully applied to the Harrods Management Training scheme and spent a number of years gaining management experience and attaining the role of Executive buyer for Fresh Produce. David completed a number of management training courses including “train the trainer” and won Trainee of the Year in 1989.
The Funeral Service has had a major influence on David’s life from an early age, as his father Ivan was a local authority cemetery manager / registrar in Hertfordshire for 35 years. It was always in David’s career plan to move into the Funeral Service, once he had gained management experience in another industry; he made the move full time into the Funeral Service in 1991, having previously been part time.
Once David changed careers, he continued studying and successfully obtained the Diploma in Funeral Directing. Once this was completed, David continued his interest in studying and became a Tutor in 1993. In nearly two decades David has tutored many individuals in mainly the Foundation Certificate and Diploma in Funeral Directing. Eight years ago, David faced his greatest tutoring challenge when his wife Kerry, studied under his tutorship. Kerry passed the Diploma, and soon afterwards David and Kerry founded the South East School of Funeral Service.
In 2006 the London Association of Funeral Directors approached David, to become a member of a committee charged with reviewing educational qualifications in the London area. As part of this group, David helped with the creation of the London Association of Funeral Directors Certificate in Funeral Arranging and Administration: the forerunner of the National Certificate. After this certificate was introduced, David was the only tutor in the South East to deliver the necessary training to obtain this qualification. To date over 100 candidates have successfully achieved this award. The qualification is shortly to be launched Nationwide and David has acted as consultant on a number of key issues and looks forward to its successful launch in the near future.
Although working full time as a Funeral Director, David is pleased to offer one to one tuition, as well as small group and full class room tuition. Over the years, David has successfully assisted many individuals in obtaining service sector based qualifications.. David’s professional fee for support and assistance in gaining this nationwide qualification is £2195.00, depending on the location and size of the class.

I run Rosedale Funeral Home with my husband Simon, our own funeral business which we established in 2004. Although I enjoy all aspects of teaching Funeral Directing, my particular areas of expertise are marketing, environmentally friendly funerals, children’s funerals, child bereavement and Mental Health First Aid.
Having gained my Certificate in Teaching in the Life Long Learning Sector, I am passionate about helping people who are keen to enter the profession and who are motivated to progress and gain new skills and qualifications, and that is why I run my courses on a flexible basis, making the training as accessible as possible. I have found that most students prefer to meet for full days rather than shorter periods in the evenings after work and so I organise block training days during the week, or for companies sending four or more students, weekend training can be negotiated.
