Unit 1: Portfolio Activity 4

How does your business / your employer’s business compare to local funeral service competitors?

Create a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis and upload to your portfolio.

NAFD Guidance –

In this activity the student is firstly required to create a SWOT analysis. Once they have compiled this SWOT
analysis, they then need to consider how elements of the SWOT analysis impact on themselves, their team,
the business and wider community or client.

In order to achieve maximum marks for this activity, the student should provide 4 – 5 impact examples from
across the SWOT analysis, not each of the segments. They may choose to focus on the examples which they
are most confident with, and then provide the impacts for these.

Example: Consider SWOT against: Staffing, Community, Marketing, Reputation, Pricing, Use of Social Media /
Website, Client Feedback, Products and Services.

A SWOT analysis is an internal and external view of your business.

  • Strengths – Internal strengths, ability to flex, staffing levels, equipment etc.
  • Weaknesses – Internal weaknesses, how does the business respond to stress, are there any areas that need to develop?
  • Opportunities – External opportunities, are there areas that could be developed that other people haven’t looked at or are ignoring?
  • Threats – Who is trying to get your business. This should not just be based on local competition.
  • Within your answer consider the impacts on Yourself, Colleagues, Your Business, The Community.
